OUR HISTORY

Established in 1992, SSEK has evolved into a law firm with the most experienced, highly trained lawyers in the industry, all of whom are focused on achieving the best result for their clients.

 

SSEK has the depth and breadth of Indonesian legal experience and knowledge to understand each client's problems, ask the questions the client has not thought to ask, and formulate appropriate solutions.


  • 1992

    SSEK is founded and moves into a brand new building, Mayapada Tower, in the heart of Jakarta's business district.

     

    SSEK's senior Foreign Legal Advisor, Darrell R. Johnson manages the Economic Law and Improved Procurement (ELIPS) Project, the largest single country law reform project in the world, on behalf of the Project contractors.


    Members of SSEK contribute to the ELIPS Project in the drafting, finalizing and socializing of several laws, including the Company Law and the Fiducia Law.

    Members of SSEK participate on the Board of Advisors of the ELIPS Project.

  • 1997 to 1998

    During the Asian Economic Crisis, SSEK participates in the Initiative Group and contributes ideas on ways to deal with unsettled debt, including the new Bankruptcy Law.

    Senior Foreign Legal Consultant, Darrell R. Johnson is selected as a Fellow of the American Bar Association.

  • 1998 to 2000

    SSEK advises a number of clients with assets held by the Indonesian Bank Restructuring Agency.

     

    Retty Suhardiman is recognized as an Asia Law Leading Lawyer for mergers & acquisitions.

  • 1998 to 2002

    Dyah Soewito is named as a leading Corporate/Commercial lawyer with "outstanding talent" in Chambers Global Leading Lawyers 2000-2002.


    SSEK appoints new partners for the first time, naming Rusmaini Lenggogeni among others and defines SSEK as an open partnership. The total number of employees reaches 119.


    In 2002, SSEK celebrates its 10th anniversary at Gedung Arsip Jakarta with over 1000 guests.

  • 2002 to 2011

    Ira A. Eddymurthy and Darrell R. Johnson participate in the Asian Development Bank’s insolvency study of Asian countries in Manila.

     

    Darrell R. Johnson is named a founding member of the International Insolvency Institute.

     

    In the same year, Jonathan M. Streifer joins SSEK as a legal advisor with a focus on mergers & acquisitions, debt restructuring and other international business transactions.

  • 2002 to 2008

    Ira A. Eddymurthy serves as the representative for Indonesia to the Inter-Pacific Bar Association and speaks at the 15th annual IPBA Conference in Bali opened by RI President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

    Eight SSEK lawyers are recognized as Asia Law Leading Lawyers across 12 practice areas, illustrating excellence in capital markets, corporate finance, insurance, intellectual property, IT & telecommunications, labor & employment, mergers & acquisitions, property, project finance, restructuring, shipping and taxation:

     

    Dyah Soewito is recognized for mergers & acquisitions, property and shipping.

     

    Retty Suhardiman is recognized for insurance, mergers & acquisitions and shipping.

     

    Ira Eddymurthy is recognized for capital markets, restructuring, IT and mergers & acquisitions.

    SSEK advises the creditor group on the restructuring of Asian Pulp & Paper, the largest debt restructuring in Asian history.

  • 2005

    Retty Suhardiman is recognized as a leading practitioner in Indonesia by Asia Law in mergers & acquisitions, shipping, maritime & aviation. Fitriana Mahiddin begins co-authoring with Michael Twomey a comprehensive Gas Regulation chapter for Getting The Deal Through published by the Global Competition Review. Ms. Mahiddin and Mr. Twomey would write the same chapter for 4 consecutive years. Mr. Twomey is also recognized by Chambers Global and Legal 500 as one of the top corporate, commercial and mergers & acquisitions lawyers in Indonesia.

  • 2006 to 2008

    SSEK is named Indonesian Law Firm of the Year by Who’s Who Legal, the official research partner of the International Bar Association and is the first Indonesian firm to receive such recognition. In the same year, A. Supriyani Kardono is recognized by Asia Law and Practice, Who’s Who Legal and The Asia-Pacific Legal 500 as a leading lawyer in general corporate practice, capital markets, intellectual property, IT and telecommunications and labor and employment.

    Richard D. Emmerson is endorsed by Chambers Global, Chamber Asia and Asia Law & Practice as a leading corporate/commercial and corporate governance lawyer and by the International Financial Law Review and Chambers Asia as a leading labor and employment lawyer.

    SSEK introduces three new partners and becomes the largest independent Indonesian law firm. In the same year, eight SSEK lawyers are named as 2009 Asia Law Leading Lawyers across 17 practice areas:

    Rusmaini Lenggogeni is recognized in General Corporate Practice, Labor & Employment, Merger & Acquisitions, and Corporate Governance.     SSEK holds a cocktail reception in Singapore as an expression of gratitude towards clients and international law firms for their support over many years. With over 145 employees this year, SSEK continues to remain the largest independent law firm in Indonesia.
